U.S. air-carriers bid for flying to Cuba

Airline News

U.S. airlines are submitting applications to serve routes to Cuba; Havana is the most popular destination

The U.S. Department of Transportation have received applications from airlines that are interested in beginning operations between Cuba and the U.S.

For the next few months, the government will review all the requests. The decision regarding chosen airlines and important routes is expected to be made until summer. Flights to smaller cities will be approved even sooner.

The standard procedure calls for airlines to register schedules and begin ticket selling after clearance from the government's officials. During the U.S. government's deliberation, airlines require to apply to Cuba's civil aviation authority for an permit that allows operations on its territory.

The recent agreement signed between the two nations allows up to 110 additional charter and commercial flights. 20 of them will service Havana, one of the most popular Cuban destination.

The start of commercial flights to Cuba will make it easier for U.S. tourists to visit the country, if belonging to one of the authorized categories (family visits, professional meetings, medical and humanitarian aid, cultural gatherings).

With the route application deadline met on Wednesday, here are the eight airlines that applied for flying permits to various routes to Cuban cities: American Airlines, Delta airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Silver Airways.
