Turkish travel industry still vulnerable in 2015

Despite political stability after new elections, Istanbul remains vulnerable as a touristic destination amid lingering security concerns

The ruling Justice and Development Party regained parliamentary majority during Sunday's election in Turkey. The results promised of stability after months of political unrest and violence.

But analysts are concerned that the country's tourism industry remains vulnerable, after the $35 billion total tourism influx last year fell 4.4 percent in the third quarter this year, after Islamic State suicide bombers killed more than 100 people in the capital Ankara,in the deadliest Turkish incident.

“Security risks remain very prominent, and this will continue to weigh on tourism flows from the European Union and other Western nations. The Oct. 10 Ankara twin suicide bombings highlighted Turkey’s vulnerability to Islamic terrorism”, declared Lucas dos Santos, Europe, the Middle East and Africa strategist at BMI Research in London.

Due to its geographical position between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Turkey is still deeply polarized over the Sirian civil war ruling AKP and the Kurdistan Workers Party, an armed Kurdish group in Turkey that seeks a Kurdish state.

"How can Turkey overcome this polarization? It's difficult to say. What is certain is that distancing Turkey from the brink of a civil war will be one of the greatest challenges for the country's next administration”, declared Sinan Ekim and Kemal Kirisci in a Brookings Institution recent situation analysis.

Hotels in Istanbul continue struggling, despite Turkey's unique combination of both Western and Eastern culture and its 42 million record visitors last year, which pushed up the country as the world's sixth most attractive tourist destination, according to a World Tourism Organization 2014 report.

“Turkey's tourism figures have indeed suffered recently. We see limited potential for a quick rebound in Russian tourism, as the economy will be slow to recover, while the government's recent involvement in Syria will only serve to further portray neighboring Turkey as a precarious destination”, Lucas dos Santos concluded.
