Travelling with Kids – Top 3 Kid-Friendly Attractions in Madrid

Destinations

By Sam Kent |

Travelling with children makes any trip a little more challenging, and it is essential to plan activities which will keep young minds from getting cranky and bored. The Spanish capital is a wonderful place to spend a short break, with plenty of amazing sights to take in no matter what your age; that said, we’ve picked out three particular attractions which are guaranteed to keep kids of any age happy.

1. Parque Warner

You can never go wrong with taking kids to a theme park, and the Parque Warner to the south of Madrid is one of Spain’s best. 30 minutes journey from the centre of town and accessible by car, bus or train, Parque Warner has plenty of rides and sights to keep families entertained for a day. Rides like Inferno and Friday the 13th will satisfy thrill-seekers, while the not-too-wild Rapids and Adventures of Scooby Doo are just a couple of rides which will keep younger or less-adventurous people happy. There are also ‘live’, Disneyland-style appearances from a range of Warner Brothers characters, as well as several shows and parades around the park.

2. Madrid Xanadu

On the edge of an industrial park in Navalcarnero, just over 20km from the centre of the city, this exceedingly large shopping and entertainment complex has at its heart the Madrid Snowzone, a huge indoor ski and snowboarding centre complete with artificial snow all year round. Booking access online in advance comes with a 10% discount; a child can go tobogganing for just 8€. The centre is also home to a bowling alley, 15-screen cinema, go-karting track, amusement arcade and miniature golf course, so there is no shortage of things to do no matter how old those you have in tow might be. If one or more of your group wants to take in a bit of retail therapy, the centre’s stores sell almost everything you might want.

3. Zoo Aquarium de Madrid

Combining a traditional zoo with plenty of aquatic animal displays, including a dolphin show, this excellent animal park has plenty to keep both young and older children entertained, while offering plenty for big kids to get excited about too! In addition to the dolphins and kids’ other aquatic favourites like penguins and sharks, the zoo also has giant pandas, far from common in European zoos. Entrance is pretty standard at just under 20€ per person, though photography or ‘interaction’ experiences with the animals costs extra. If you don’t fancy the Zoo Aquarium, you may wish to try out the Faunia on the other side of town. Divided up into several distinctive ecosystems from Mediterranean forest to Amazonian jungle, there are many opportunities for visitors to take a stroll in controlled enclosures and experience the wildlife flying or walking around them.
