Tourists Visiting Greece Warned To Take Cash

Announcements

By Steve Sims |

Tourists visiting Greece have been warned to bring sufficient cash to cover the expenses of their holiday as the economic crisis in the country continues.

Capital controls have been imposed following the announcement, the government deciding to limit the amount of cash allowed to be withdrawn by locals.

Credit and debit cards registered overseas remain unaffected by the imposed limits, but it is almost inevitable that banks run out of available cash this week.

George Osborne, First Secretary of State and Second Lord of the Treasury, advised those travelling to Greece to take hundreds of euros in cash.

"We are still hoping for the best, but we must also prepare for the worst," he explained.

Osborne also announced coming support for exporters having cash flow problems and help for British pensioners living in Greece.

At the same time, the Foreign Office is advising tourists to bring enough euros in cash to cover the entire duration of their trips, including unforeseen circumstances, unexpected delays and emergencies.

Greece first announced a €60 daily limit on ATM cash withdrawals, but that number dropped to €50 as of two days ago.

The Foreign Office is also cautioning holidaymakers that protests across the country might occur on Sunday, July 5, when Greece will hold a referendum on EU austerity measures.
