Tourists can no longer visit the island of Koh Tachai

Announcements
One of the most beautiful islands in the world and a perfect summer destination for tourist worldwide will be no longer accessible. The reason is that because of the large number of tourists who choose this island as a holiday destination, the ecosystem of Koh Tachai is in danger.

The Thai authorities announced that Koh Tachai will enter a period of recovery, faster than they had expected, after the flow of tourists has seriously affected the ecosystem. Thus, starting 15th of October, Koh Tachai will not receive visitors for an indefinite period of time.

Tunya Netithammakul, general manager of the department in charge of national parks in Thailand, declared for the Bangkok Post newspaper that without such measures the island will be affected irreversibly. “We have to close it to allow the rehabilitation of the environment, both on the island and in the sea, without being disturbed by tourism activities before the damage is beyond repair”.

The popularity enjoyed by the island among tourists has led to overcrowding and the environment was degraded to the point where if no action is taken it will become impossible to recover the losses. An example that led to this situation is the permanent exceeding of the limit set for beach tourists, 70 people a day. Thus, the number reached is often of more than 1,000 people.

“A beach on the island can hold up to 70 people. But sometimes the number of tourists was well over 1,000 on the beach, which was already crowded with food stalls and tour boats. This caused the island to quickly deteriorate,” said Thon Thamrongnawasawat, the deputy dean of the fisheries faculty at Kasetsart University in Bangkok.
