The Largest Plane Ever Built Will Complete a Tough Mission

Announcements

The biggest airplane ever built will travel through the longest route in its history

The aircraft, weighing about 600 tons took off on Tuesday, May 10, on the Ukrainian Gostomel airport and will land in front of huge crowds of enthusiastic people on the airport of Perth, Australia, on Sunday morning.

Designed and built in Ukraine in 1980, Antonov An-225 Mriya airplane will have to make several stops to be refueled before the cargo carried by an electric generator weighing 117 tonnes to reach the destination. The device was taken from the Czech Republic to be delivered to the Australian mining company Worstely Alumina. Once put into operation, the generator will be designed to supply the equipment used for processing bauxite, the ore from which aluminum is extracted.

Measuring 84 meters long and with a wingspan of 88 meters, almost twice the usual width of a football field, the plane was used for over two decades to carry heavy loads. Without being charged, the An-225 Mriya Antonov (word which in Ukrainian means ,,dream ") can fly for up to 18 hours without being refueled.

Engineers estimated that the discharge phase of the on-board generator could take up to 10 hours. Perth airport administration expects the event to be attended by over 50,000 people. In this regard, special areas have been prepared, from which visitors can easily see the airplane’s landing.
