The Adonia Cruise Ship Left the US, Arrived in Havana

Cruise News

The cruise ship "Adonia", the company Fathom, a subsidiary of Carnival, arrived Monday in Havana and opened the first cruise line between the US and Cuba in more than half a century, reports EFE

"Adonia" cruise ship, with 704 passengers on board, departed on Sunday from Miami, Florida, heading towards Cuba. The Cuban government recently announced the lifting of restrictions on travel by sea for all Cubans.

Carnival, the largest cruise ship in the world, promises to its travelers a truly cultural immersion, with a first stop in Havana, the Cuban capital. The tourist will discover the amazing old center of Havana and its system of fortifications that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage, according to the whc.unesco.org site.

The visit in Havana will be followed by a stopover in the city of Cienfuegos, known as the "Pearl of the South". Its historic urban center was also considered by UNESCO World Heritage List, according to the before mentioned site.

Cuba and the US resumed their diplomatic relations in last years; however some trade and transportation restrictions imposed during the Cold War still remain. The voyages between the two countries were authorized after Cuba has lifted a ban on Cuban citizens leaving or entering by sea. Carnival, the American company that operates the vessel declared it has received permission from both countries to perform maritime cruises from Florida to Cuba.
