Swiss train derail – an unusual occurence

Rail News

Freak Swiss weather for August

A Swiss train has derailed after passing through a landslide in the Alps, close to the ski resort of St. Moritz.

Five of the eleven injured people require special medical attention as they have suffered serious injuries from the accident. No fatalities have been reported so far.

During the event, one of the carriages had been hanging over the edge of the ravine while another found its final resting place behind a nearby tree.

The occurrence of the landslide has been made possible by intensive rain in Switzerland over the same period.

However, the weather shows unusual capriciousness for this time of the year, a season more assocswiss trainiated with leisure tourism rather than landslides.

One of the passengers on board of the Swiss train has declared for 20 Minuten:

"We all rushed to the back of the carriage to put all of our weight there so that it wouldn't tip into the abyss,"

Approximately 200 people were traveling with the train when the accident happened.

The place where it took place is close to Tiefencastel, somewhere between Chur and St Moritz, Graubeunden.

This is a rather rare sighting in the Swiss travel services, as they are being viewed as one of the safest world-wide. However, it has been demonstrated yet again that one cannot stand in front of nature unleashed.
