Royal palace named world's best hotel

Hospitality
One of the largest private residences in the world, Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India, was built between 1928 and 1943 for Maharaja Umaid Singh

Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, is one of the world's largest private residences. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh of the palace, this edifice has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family. A part of the palace also houses a museum.

Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to use of stones drawn from the Chittar hill where it is located. Ground for the foundations of the building was broken on 18 November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid Singh and the construction work was completed in 1943. The Palace was built to provide employment to thousands of people during the time of famine.

Part of the palace is now run by Taj Group hotels and is TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice pick for world's best hotel. Set amid 26 acres of lush gardens, there are 64 hotel rooms and suites within the Art Deco palace.

TripAdvisor's global hotels list, released Wednesday, is among several lists of top hotels in various categories.
In addition to the global category, TripAdvisor named top Travelers' Choice hotels in the U.S. and compiled lists around other segments including luxury and bargain properties.
Millions of reviews and opinions collected over a one-year period are used to create each Travelers' Choice list.
The world's top 10 hotels are all committed to service and quality, and they have five out of five bubble ratings on TripAdvisor, according to company spokeswoman Julie Cassetina.
"These properties are providing more than just a bed for travelers; they've gone above and beyond to deliver a memorable experience for their guests, which makes all the difference," Cassetina said.
