Northern England Train Stations Shine After Volunteer Clean-Up

Car Rental & Rail

Volunteers across the North of England have come together during the Great British Spring Clean, leaving stations operated by Northern sparkling and enhancing local community pride.

In a heartening display of community spirit and environmental responsibility, volunteers across the North of England have taken part in the Great British Spring Clean, resulting in several train stations looking spotless and welcoming. The stations, operated by Northern and located in areas such as Batley, Beverley, Blaydon, and others, benefited from the dedication of local volunteers who braved various weather conditions to pick up litter and beautify the surroundings.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the Great British Spring Clean is an annual event that encourages people nationwide to help clean up their local areas. This year, from March 15 to 31, volunteers at stations like Beverley and Hebden Bridge devoted hours to removing trash, including coffee cups, sandwich wrappers, cigarette butts, and more unusual items like hub caps and an old Christmas tree stand.

Notable Contributions:

  • Friends of Beverley Station volunteers not only tackled litter but also contribute to the beautification of the station through tree and flower maintenance. Their efforts are part of a larger vision to create a welcoming impression for visitors to Beverley.
  • Friends of Hebden Bridge Station focused on enhancing the station's aesthetic appeal with garden maintenance and flower planting, making it a delightful sight for passengers, particularly during the summer.
  • Friends of Batley Station volunteers, recognized for their outstanding contribution to the Great British Spring Clean Awards 2023, collected a staggering 33 bags of rubbish, demonstrating exceptional commitment to their local station's environment.

Kerry Peters, Northern's Regional Director, expressed gratitude towards the volunteer groups for their significant contributions to maintaining clean, tidy, and pleasant station environments. She highlighted the collaboration with hundreds of adoption groups across the network, underscoring the collective pride taken in ensuring stations are welcoming places to visit.

This initiative not only showcases the impact of community volunteerism on local environments but also reinforces the importance of responsible litter disposal and environmental stewardship. As Northern continues to facilitate over 2,500 services a day across more than 500 stations, the efforts of these dedicated volunteers ensure that the first impressions of towns and cities in the North of England are positive and inviting.
