Monarch Airlines is restructuring

Airline News

Monarch Airlines pulling aut of East Midlands

Monarch Airlines has announced it will no longer fly aut of their base in East Midlands Airport as of April 2015.

This decision is part of a new strategy implemented by the new chef executive for the group, Andrew Swaffield.

The restructuring will also imply cutting 1000 jobs, a third of its effective personnel.

Newly discussed approach implies a boost in flight frequency as well as a more comfortable time window from Monarch Airlines clients who are concentrated around the main UK bases.

The main changes can be retrieved from the carrier’s summer schedule for 2015.

Charter flights will be dropped in order to firmly implement the new strategy which focuses on short-haul flights. The Monarch fleet will also be restructured, keeping only 30 of its current 42 aircrafts.

The airline’s objective is to become a scheduled European low-cost carrier. This will also be encouraged by the 30 new 737 MAX8s expected in 2018.

“I would like to thank all our customers who have used Monarch’s services at East Midlands Airport in the two years tMonarch Airlineshat we have been there.

“I would also like to pay tribute to our employees for all that they have done to bring the warmth, humanity and personal touch that should be our hallmark to our services at East Midlands Airport.”

“Monarch’s success in the future depends upon us delivering the best possible operation and quality of service for our customers – and at sustainable levels of profitability.

“It is for these reasons that we are taking important decisions to reshape our base network and flying schedule next year.

“As holiday habits change, our customers want a greater choice of flight times and destinations – particularly for short breaks.

“As we evolve from our roots in charter flying to become a scheduled European low-cost carrier we are becoming more focussed in the services we offer which we believe will provide customers overall with a more attractive flying schedule in the future.” - Andrew Swaffield, chief executive, Monarch Group
