Cruise News

The debate on rather to make cruise ship safety info public has stirred controversy yet again as three senators, including Jay Rockefeller, are demanding that information gathered on surprise safety inspections on cruise ships should be made available to the open public.Cruise Safety

An open letter to the U.S. Coast Guard Commandant has been sent in order to clarify this matter, as the three senators wish to know “how it plans to use inspection information to hold cruise ships with safety problems accountable.”, demanding that the information should be published online in order to be easily accessed by those interested.

The senators who filed this proposal are: Jay Rockefeller – West Virginia, Richard Blumenthal – Connecticut and Edward J. Markey – Massachusetts.

The initiative is related to the announcement made by the Coast Guard on March 5th, stating that certain cruise ships will undergo unannounced inspections in order to determine safety hazards which can occur in key sectors. Mostly, the search will focus on fire hazards and safety measures against this issue. However, the inspection will also include other aspects related to passenger safety like lifesaving equipment, etc.

“We agree it is strategic of the Coast Guard to target ships and vessels that have a pattern or history of safety problems, but we further expect that consumers should also be privy to the insights and patterns that the Coast Guard already knows, in addition to the ones it discovers in the future,”

“Furthermore, the Coast Guard does a disservice to the public when it shields from consumers the identity of cruise ships and lines that have a pattern of noncompliance.” – the three U.S. Senators behind the initiative
