MahaNakhon, the strangest skyscraper in Thailand

News

MahaNakhon construction, known as Pixel Tower was inaugurated with an impressive lights show in Bangkok, according to the Daily Mail. The skyscraper is considered by both tourists and locals to be one of the strangest buildings in Thailand.

The building of 77 floors and 314 meters high will house of a hotel, several bars, restaurants, 200 residential apartments and shops, according to the Daily Mail. The apartments have their own balconies squares giving the complex a new aspect, writes the newspaper. It recently topped out – becoming the tallest structure in the Thai capital, ahead of the 304-metre Baiyoke Tower II built in 1997. But it is expected to soon be overtaken by a residential tower also under construction.

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture — the firm founded by famed Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas — announced plans for the building in 2009, but the final design was completed by international architecture firm Büro Ole Scheeren. The firm teamed up with Thai residential property developer PACE Development, and the building reportedly cost 18 billion baht ($520 million) to complete.

Ole Scheeren, the German architect of the skyscraper, revealed the press that sometimes the building seems to be unfinished or incomplete. He added that the building owner wanted to differentiate the skyscraper from other buildings of Thailand. "Perhaps the way to be different is not trying to be special, but to continue on a simplistic line," added Ole Scheeren. He describes the structure as having been "carefully carved to introduce a three-dimensional ribbon of architectural pixels that coil up the tower's full height to reveal the inner life of the building".
