Lufthansa to end operations in Venezuela
Airline News
The German airliner announced suspending its flights to Caracas, Venezuela due to country's economic and humanitarian crisis
According to the official statement, Lufthansa “will be forced to suspend service between Caracas and Frankfurt as of 18 June”.
Operations in the South American country will end due to the financial difficulties the nation is going through, as it resulted in a considerable drop in flight demands, in both last year and the first quarter of 2016. Andreas Bartles, Lufthansa's spokesman, also explained the reasons for the decision. First, the low demand affected business flights. Second, due to difficult money exchange system in the country, Lufthansa struggles to convert Venezuelan currency.
Nevertheless, despite the suspension is currently set on an “indefinite period of time”, the airliner hopes that service in Venezuela will be resumed in the near future, when the situation here will improve.
Coca-Cola, another business giant operating in South America, also stated that its production in Venezuela will be temporarily unavailable, due to sugar shortages that make functioning of the production line impossible.
