LNER Introduces Free Organic Period Products Onboard

Car Rental & Rail

LNER partners with TOTM to offer free, environmentally friendly period products across its network, becoming the first UK train operator to support passengers and staff with period care needs.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is setting a new standard in passenger care and sustainability by becoming the first UK train operator to offer free period products across its trains, stations, and offices. This initiative, in partnership with the ethical period care brand TOTM, aims to address the urgent need for accessible period products, as highlighted by new research indicating that 22 percent of people have found themselves in need of period products while unable to access them.

To raise awareness, LNER plans to use eye-catching stickers in customer toilets and First Class lounges, indicating the availability of TOTM's organic period care items. This move expands the 'Package for a Friend' scheme, initially launched at London King’s Cross Station, to the entire LNER network as part of its broader commitment to 'A Better Journey'. The scheme emphasizes equality and sustainability, ensuring everyone has access to necessary period care products during travel.

Customers in need can discreetly request TOTM products from any LNER team member or order through the 'Let's Eat At Your Seat' catering service via a QR code. Orders will be discreetly delivered to the customer's seat, ensuring privacy and convenience.

The necessity of this initiative is underscored by LNER's commissioned research, revealing that many travelers have experienced difficulty accessing period products while on public transport, with over half of these instances occurring on trains. This lack of access not only causes discomfort but also anxiety and stress for those affected.

Gill McKay, an On Train Delivery Manager at LNER involved in the program since its inception, stressed the importance of providing free, environmentally friendly period products to support passengers and staff alike. The initiative aims to ensure comfortable and confident travel for everyone, while also addressing environmental concerns and breaking down the stigma associated with menstruation.

Kiley Yale from TOTM highlighted the collaboration's significance in promoting period comfort, wellbeing, and dignity across LNER's network. By offering certified organic cotton period care products, LNER is leading the charge in supporting menstrual health in a sustainable manner. This partnership not only makes period products readily accessible but also aligns with broader goals of environmental responsibility and social equity.
