JAL Updates International Fare Fuel Surcharge for Mid-2024 Tickets

Airlines & Airports

Japan Airlines announces a revision in fuel surcharges for international flights from Japan, effective June 1 to July 31, 2024, following recent trends in jet fuel prices.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has submitted a request to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to revise the fuel surcharge on international passenger tickets purchased in Japan from June 1 through July 31, 2024. This adjustment is based on the fluctuations in fuel prices, specifically the cost of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel.

Over the months of February and March 2024, the price of this jet fuel averaged USD 102.81 per barrel. The corresponding exchange rate during this period was JPY 15,373 at a rate of JPY/USD 149.52. JAL's policy stipulates that the fuel surcharge level is adjusted bimonthly in response to these international fuel price trends.

The new surcharge aims to address the cost pressures faced by the airline due to the volatile fuel market, ensuring that JAL can maintain its service standards and operational efficiency without compromising on quality. Travelers planning international trips with Japan Airlines during this period are advised to be aware of the potential increase in ticket costs due to the updated surcharges.

This proactive measure is part of JAL’s ongoing efforts to manage external economic factors that significantly impact airline operations. Customers are encouraged to visit JAL's official website or contact their service centers for more detailed information on how this might affect their travel planning and costs.
