India: 50 million trees were planted in just 24 hours

India reached a new record, this time in the ecological field. In order for the polluted cities of India to become greener and environmentally friendly, almost 50 million trees have been planted, exceeding the existing world record. The event took place in Uttar Pradesh, one of the most populated cities in the north India.

More than 800,000 people of all ages, from students to housewives and government officials, have planted 49.3 million seedlings in a period of time of only 24 hours. Seedlings of 80 different species were brought in from 950 greenhouses in the country.

Earlier, Pakistan was the owner of this record after the residents of this state have planted 847.275 trees in 2013, but the Indians’ attempt has already been certified by the Guinness Book making this country the new holder of the title.

During the Paris Convention on Climate Change, India stated that it would enhance a growth in forests in an area of 95 million hectares by 2030, the Indian government investing 6.2 billion dollars for this purpose.

“The world has realized that serious efforts are needed to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global climate change,” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said at an event promoting the planting. Officials also hope the trees will improve air quality in India, which suffers from some of the worst in the world. Trees can help remove some pollutants from the air. Right now, 6 of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are in the country.
