Festival of Akwasidae unveiled by Silversea cruise line
Silversea's luxury cruise passengers, part of Silver Cloud’s March 16th 2016 West Africa cruise, will enjoy an astonishing 16-day sea trip from Tema (Accra) to Barcelona. Optionally, they will also benefit from a six-day pre-cruise land adventure to discover “Accra & the Ashanti Kingdom” program, part of the rare occasion to attend the Festival of Akwasidae.
The royal palace in the city of Kumasi will welcome the ancestors-honoring local ceremony presided by the 16th ruler of the Ashanti people, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Ashanti people were one of the most powerful community in Africa until the British occupation at the end of the 19th century.
Kumasi is also home for almost one million inhabitants and one of the largest central markets in Africa. Traditions here and local distinctive features will be enjoyed by Silversea's guest during a three-night stay in the city.

Guests will also have the possibility to attend the making of the traditional adinkra textile workshop, together with the Ashanti people. The traditional hand-painted cloth used in religious rituals in Ghana is decorated with Ashanti symbols using a bark made black dye called adinkra aduru.
