Erdogan imposed a three-month state of emergency in Turkey

News

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the establishment of a national state of emergency in Turkey for at least three months. This hard political measure had been taken after the attempted and failed coup, reports the local newspaper, Hurriyet.

In response to the president’s order, the Turkey’s parliament has approved a bill declaring a state of emergency in the wake of last weekend’s coup attempt and informed the Council of Europe of a partial withdrawal from the European convention on human rights.

"This measure is in no way against democracy, the law and freedoms," said Erdogan after announcing the state of emergency. Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, told Reuters on Thursday there were significant failures in intelligence before last Friday’s attempted military coup and that the armed forces would quickly be restructured and “get fresh blood”.

“It is very clear that there were significant gaps and deficiencies in our intelligence, there is no point trying to hide it or deny it. I told it to the head of national intelligence,” Erdogan said in his palace in Ankara, which was targeted during the coup attempt.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Turkey to limit the duration of the state of emergency and to exercise restraint in its political response to the failed coup, Reuters reported. In a statement released Sunday night, in response to the imposition of emergency in Turkey, Steinmeier asked the government in Ankara to respect the rule of law and the principle of proportionality related to the measures taken against the failed putsch.
