Emirates to cut flights during Dubai International upgrades

Travel Business

By Michael Bobbin |

Emirates Airline will be honoring all its destinations during the 80 days of runway upgrade in Dubai International which will begin on the 1st of May.

Costumer-wise, the effect will be felt in flight frequency. Over 40 destinations will be influenced by this process; with a timing change for most of the flights.

However, the changes will not have effect on early bookings for May-July given that the arrangements have already been set-up moths ago.

“Customers who have booked to fly with us, or are considering to fly with us during this time, can be assured that it is business as usual.

“On routes where Emirates has had to reduce frequency, we have upgraded to bigger aircraft where possible to recover part of the capacity.Dubai International Airport

“We have done a lot of preparation work behind the scenes together with all airport stakeholders, to ensure that there will be as little inconvenience to our customers as possible, and we look forward to resuming our full schedule of flights in July,”

“As the biggest operator at Dubai International accounting for about 50 per cent of traffic, of course we have had to take the biggest hit in reducing flights.

“There will be an impact on our revenues to the tune of approximately AED 1 billion.” - Tim Clark, president, Emirates Airline.

The services will be shortened during May, June and July.

“However, we understand the need for this upgrading work to be done, and we support it wholeheartedly.

“It will add much-needed capacity to the airport, and having world-class infrastructure ultimately means a better experience for customers. So we have to take the long-term view and manage the short term pain.” - Clark added.

The upgrade includes work on the Global Communications Suite, also known as GCS. Another important maintenance detail is the landing gear change for a Boeing 777-300ER, the start of a project which will eventually include more than 70 other aircrafts. This type of scheduled maintenance regarding the landing gear takes place once every ten years.
