Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced the launching of Dubai’s new tran network, due November 11th 2014.

This project marks as the first one of its kind with electric supply system outside Europe.

Given that trial operations have begun, Sheikh Mohammed has toured the depot, a staggering compound of 11 eco-friendly buildings designed to service the 25 trains. Among these, there is an operation control centre and a maintenance and cleaning centre.

The Sheikh also took one of the trains for a trial, as Mattar Al Tayer from the Roads & Transport Authority reports.

The project will be completed in different phases, the first of which being the portion between the Marina and the Dubai Police Academy, a range of approximately 10 km.

During this first phase, 17 stations will be implemented with a mobilization of 11 trains in total.

During phase two, the remaining 14 trams will be functional as well.

The expectancy in terms of transport capacity is of 27.000 passengers, ranging to 66.000/day by 2020.

Extravagance will not be forgotten during this project as each tram comes with its own gold suite and a special cabin for women and children.

Maintenance and administration will fall in the hands of Serco, who already handles Dubay Metro.

In its journey to become the world’s top tourism hub, Dubai will continue in making continuous efforts in developing new and attractive, tourist oriented services like the one discussed in this article. Dubai Tram
