Cochin: the first airport powered entirely by solar energy

Technology
Cochin International Airport, located in the south of India, becomes the first in the world powered entirely by solar energy, with a solar installation spread on more than 45 acres

The building that consists of 46,000 solar panels will produce between 50,000 and 60,000 units of electricity each day with a total value of 12 megawatts, along with other existing solar electricity capable of covering the entire airport, writes the online edition of the British newspaper The Independent.

The project first started in 2013 when on the roof of the Cochin International Airport terminal was installed the first solar panel. As the investment proved to be successful, the solar panel project was subsequently extended.
The authorities hope that this initiative will reduce carbon emissions by 300,000 tons over the next 25 years. According to the announcement made by the Indian government, there could be produced more than 100 gigawatts of solar power by 2022. Currently, the production is of approximately 4 gigawatts. Withal, the authorities declared that they want the innovation not only to contribute to India's needs but also to attract new investments in the area.
