According to new study report backed by the UN, with cheaper flights towards global new destinations rises opportunity for sexual abusers to find more victims among women and young girls and boys.
The increasing market of sex tourism across the world has been creating more and more sexual predators over the last 20 years, as new destinations including Portugal, Moldova and Ukraine were also linked to sex trafficking and sex tourism. Moreover, new sex tourism destinations brings new clientele, with nowadays sex tourists being associated more and more with business travelers and ex-pats, considered to be “situational”offenders rather than permanent abusers.
“The vulnerability of children has increased dramatically in the past 20 years as travel, tourism soared. Although the precise scope is not yet measurable, there are alarming indicators that this crime is persistent and widespread,” the report quotes.
As 1.14 billion tourists traveling across the globe last year and despite the boost having a positive impact on global economies, experts say that sex exploitation is becoming a highly alarming problem for vulnerable populations, as travelling to cities known for selling paid sexual intercourse can become notorious within the next years.
