Bordeaux is the new best city in the world

News

Bordeaux has been chosen the best city in the world to travel to, according to Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2017, the main reason due to which the Lonely Planet experts chose Bordeaux is the new tourist experience that this city offers this year: Cité du Vin (the City of Wine). For centuries, the signature of the city of Bordeaux were the wines that were produced in the vineyards that surrounds the magnificent eighteenth-century facades, lined up along the river Garonne, writes saveur.com.

If Bordeaux is the best city to travel to for 2017, it is due to “the new high speed line, scheduled for mid-2017, which will place the Gironde capital just 2 hours from Paris. “Suffice to say that it arrives just in time for the feast as the City of Wine, freshly inaugurated, rounds off the impressive transformation of the banks of the Garonne, while Bordeaux tables never cease to reinvent” says the guide. “And on the right bank, long ignored, is the future of Bordeaux which is written with buildings and facilities concerned with the urban landscape.”

From 1st of June an extremely bold new landmark shines in the city: La Cité du Vin, a 81 million euro wine museum that symbolizes a modern thinking about the emblem of France, the wine. The building, a challenging architectural glass and metal construction, built by Parisian firm XTU has a curved shape, most likely inspired by a glass of wine.

"Our goal is to tell the story of wine all over the world and that is why, every year, another wine produced here in France, will be subject to social exhibitions, lectures and tastings," says Sylvie Cazes, president of the museum.

The publication of this list, released in 8 languages, “Bordeaux will allow the city to radiate around the world to all lovers of travel and exceptional destinations,” assures the Lonely Planet. For 2017 Bordeaux in South-West France is followed by Cape Town (South Africa), Los Angeles (United States), Mérida (Mexico), Ohrid (Macedonia), Pistoia (Italy), Seoul (South Korea), Lisbon (Portugal), Moscow (Russia), and Portland (United States).
