Athens on edge after bomb explodes near parliament

Destinations

The bomb causing considerable damage but no injuries is the first major attack since Alexis Tsipras came to power in January

After a bomb explosion outside the Greek Business Federation offices and close to the country's parliament, fears about a possible wave of violence of the angry anarchists at austerity policies arise in the Greek capital.

The bombers warned Greek newspapers about the attack, given the police the necessary time to evacuate and close off the Syntagma Square area before the explosion.

There were no victims in the blast, but severe extensive building damages were caused due to the strength of the explosion, as Cypriot ambassador Kyriakos Kenevezos declared:

"Our embassy absorbed the full impact of the blast.

"All the exterior windows were blown out and there is incalculable damage to the interior from the ground floor to the sixth floor."

The attack immediately raised security concerns in Athens, in a country already facing the worst economic crisis in decades.

As Mary Bossi, professor of international security, declared for The Guardian, the country experiences difficult times:

“This was a much bigger attack than the low-intensity incidents we have seen in recent months. At a time of such high unemployment, such great anger, it could signal that Greece is in for a turbulent time of violent activity.”

Although there was no claim of responsibility for the dreadful event, imprisoned anarchists who recently issued an on-line manifesto are suspected for the violent actions.

“Our proposal is simple. An action campaign by the name Black December, which will be the detonator for the restart of anarchist insurgency inside and outside the prisons”, the manifesto stated.

According to Brady Kiesling's opinion, the author of Greek Urban Warriors: “This attack belongs in a tradition dating back to the 1970s – bombs against symbolic targets as armed propaganda for a revolution no one knows how to describe anymore.

“I assume its authors are echoing the call by imprisoned anarchist Romanos for a ‘black December’ of violence. The real message, aimed primarily at fellow radicals, is that Syriza’s grace period after the elections has now expired.”
