Are tourists safe in Egypt?

Agency News

Foreign Office has already warned Britons not to visit Egyptian oasis where attack took place on Monday

12 people were killed by security forces in the Western Desert's Bahariya Oasis bomb attack on Monday. A convoy of tourists that, according to the Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism traveled in a forbidden area, was accidentally bombed by special forces plane and helicopters, in a case of mistaken identity.

Foreign Office advised tourists about the threat the area represents. Tour operators like Discover Egypt and Wild Frontiers no longer include Bahaiya Oasis in their current itineraries. Despite warnings, Nigel Fisher, director of Wild Frontiers declared the shocking attack as an “isolated incident” and thinks that tourists should keep visiting the Nile Valley region further east, where the situation is considered to be less dangerous.

Egypt was the theater for several incidents this year, that seriously affected its tourism industry. In June, the famous temple of Karnak at Luxor was attacked by a suicide bomber and two suspected Islamic terrorists. After the Islamic State jihadist group execution of a young Croat in August, western embassies alerted tourists not to visit Bahariya. US citizens were warned to be cautious and not to leave urban zones of Cairo and Alexandria. Meanwhile, the South region of the country is stated to be safer.

The Foreign Office advises everyone not to travel to the area west of the Nile Valley, Nile Delta regions, South Sinai and North Sinai. The warn excludes the coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh, as well as Sharm el Sheikh.

Before Egypt's revolution in 2011, 14.7 million travelers visited these places in 2010, as the country is known to play a big role in the international tourism scene. The figures dropped at 9.4 million in 2013, with a slight increase of almost half a million more visitors last year.
