Antarctica expeditions celebrate Shackleton centenary

Cruise News
Silversea Expeditions marks the centenary of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition by 2015 and 2016 trips to Antarctica

Sir Ernest Shackleton led his men in the Weddell Sea Party to safety in one of the most amazing survival tales in history. It all started in November 1915, when Endurance, his ship, was no longer suitable for navigating the frozen waters of Antarctica, putting the expedition team at risk.

With the support of Silversea Expeditions and the Royal Geographical Society, this story will be revived by marking 100 years since the team of explorers managed to struggle through 138 in one of the most harsh conditions that this remote place on Earth offers.

Rebecca Stephens and Michael Palin, two of the world's renowned explorers will attend the event that marks a series of unique voyages to rediscover Shackleton’s journey to Antarctica, offered by Silversea Expedition. Michael Palin will be the guest of honor for the centenary celebration evening and Rebecca Stephens will directly join the 18-day journeys.

“The story of Shackleton’s Endurance expedition is a testament to humankind’s determination and quest for discovery.

“Celebrating this unique centennial anniversary with Silversea Expeditions and the Royal Geographical Society is an opportunity to rediscover and bring to life this unique moment in history”, Rebecca Stephens declared about the expected event.

Celebrating the centenary will mark the opening of a major exhibition at the RGS centrals: “The Enduring Eye: the Antarctic Legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley” will be available for the public from November 2015 to February 2016.

For 4 months, guests will visit iconic areas of the Antarctic including Elephant Island, South Shetland Islands where Shackleton's crew spent 105 difficult days. The trips end at South Georgia, the place where the team of explorers finally touched safe ground. Shackleton’s burial site in Grytviken will also be a visit place for boarding tourists.
