An Ancient Theater Was Found in Lefkada

Important excavations on the Greek island of Lefkada have uncovered an ancient theater

The discovery was made on the hill Kolmou by an international team of archaeologists, in a program meant to research once again the hilly area of the island.

Archaeologists knew very little about this theater as it was not mentioned by any ancient source, but all the rocks are subject to detailed studies. The presence of the ruins was however recorded by diaries of excavations carried out at the beginning of the twentieth century, showing signs and attesting the existence of a theater there.

After finishing the research and the studies, archaeologists and historians found the ruins of the seats, an area for the choir and walls designed to support the scenes. The chairs were carved in stone and were pretty high. The drilled sections indicate the presence of a wide area, perhaps intended to serve the audience.

The Greek Minister of Culture declared that the excavations will continue as the monument could not have been studied in its entirety. Local authorities of the Lefkada Island and locals were involved to preserve and protect the ruins as they are expected to become an important tourist attraction.

Lefkada Island is a paradise with beautiful beaches and crystalline waters, a place full of history and culture, one of the most visited areas of Greece, with thousands of tourists yearly.
