Brussels Subway Runs Again on Regular Routes and Schedule

Announcements

The subway in Brussels is circulating again on its regular routes and schedule starting this week’s Monday morning, one month after the terrorist attacks on March 22 in the Belgian capital

The attacks were committed to the Zaventem International Airport and Maelbeek Subway Station, just a few hundred meters from the main European institutions, Libre Belgique daily newspaper writes on its online edition.

The circulation resumption occurred smoothly, said Françoise Le Dune, the spokeswoman for the STIB, the Brussels public transport company. All the 69 subway stations are functional and trains run according to the normal schedules before the attacks.

The Maelbeek station, where on 22 March 1 kamikaze bomb was detonated and killed 16 people, was also reopened. According to the authorities, the stations were opened progressively, starting at 04.40 local time (02.40 GMT), and access is now available by only two entries in each station.

Policemen and military provide security in each of the 69 stations. On the Maelbeek station there has been created a place of remembrance for travelers who want to express their thoughts. On Saturday, the people that were wounded in the attacks and their relatives have written testimonies on the walls of the Maelbeek station.

Brussels attacks that took place at the airport and the Maelbeek subway station ended with 32 dead and over 300 injured.
