New tourism plan aims to classify hotels as "national infrastructure", which will lower the development costs and also Israel vacation prices

According to Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and Tourism Minister Yariv Levin, the new plan announced on Wednesday and still waiting for cabinet approval will increase the number of hotel rooms and boost the country's tourism market competition, leading to a 20% drop in vacation costs in the next five years.

15,000 hotel rooms in the next five years and 12,000 more rooms in 10 years will be build according to the new development plan.

Also, classifying hotels as “national infrastructure” and the fast-tracked compliance of National Infrastructure Committee will reduce time and money for building approval and will make it easier for new hotels to develop.

“This is a step that will be felt in the pocket of each and everyone of us. The program will ensure that entrepreneurs will not be forced to go through the bureaucratic ordeals, and the construction of a hotel in Israel will no longer be a dream”, Tourism Minister Yariv Levin declared.

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon also explains the financial advantages of the 20% drop in costs:

“Strengthening the tourism sector in these times in particular is in the national interest. Shortening the procedures for planning and construction in the industry joins the other initiatives in the housing market that we are leading, by removing the obstacles and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.”

Israel Hotel Association president Eli Gonen welcomed the program, but underlined that the government-approved decisions could sooner bring down prices, in the next year instead of five years.

“In order not to have a rerun of the Golan Telecom syndrome, it’s very important to reduce bureaucracy and reduce costs to help entrepreneurs build hotels, but it’s also important to increase the number of tourists to allow the hotels to survive”, he said.
