2 KZN HOTEL GROUPS MERGE WITH GAUTENG BASED GROUP
BOOSTING SA AND AFRICAN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

Sovereign Hotels Merges with eLan Hospitality and African Insignia Hotels

Sovereign Hotels announced the completion of a successful merger with the eLan Property Group, as well as African Insignia Hotels as part of its service offering. The joint venture between Sovereign Hotels and eLan Property Group will be known as Sovereign eLan Hotels. Sovereign Hotels is one of the fastest growing hotel brands in Africa, with a selection of three, four and five star city hotels, bush lodges, resorts and sectional-title developments on the continent of Africa and in the Indian Ocean Islands whilst eLan Hospitality owns a number of hotels and resorts in Southern Africa.
“This is a significant development for both companies”, said Sovereign Hotels CEO and founder, Martin Carberry, “It will enable us to use our combined resources and skills to present true African hospitality and to help establish Africa in its rightful place as one of the world's premier hospitality destinations. With sales and operations offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, we believe this merger is poised to make significant inroads in the regional hospitality industry”.
The Executive Directors of the hospitality division of the eLan Property Group under the guidance of Alan Vels has been involved with the development and operation of over 90 hotels, large scale integrated resort developments and game lodges in sub-Saharan Africa. Sovereign will also benefit from 23 years of experience accumulated by eLan in all facets of hospitality operations, marketing, sales, day-to-day management and hotel development. Mark Taylor, CEO of The eLan Property Group, believes that this merger augers well for their hotel property portfolio.
“Sovereign brings an established track record and a wealth of operational and marketing skill in the hospitality industry to the table”, said Taylor, “We are confident that this will translate into enhanced real estate value for the Groups’ hotel properties”.
Part of the merger involves African Insignia Hotels, whose brand will be retained to represent a smaller portfolio of boutique properties. The Directors of Insignia, Jessica Nhleko and Lerina McCall welcomed the opportunity for collaboration and will be adding their skills to the Sovereign eLan team. African Insignia Hotels currently represent a number of hotels in Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal and Mozambique and they will enhance Sovereign eLan Hotels’ ability by bringing a new capacity for sales and marketing.
Sovereign elan Hotels combined already have 23 properties in their portfolio and are in the process of developing 20 more. They anticipate that their combined strength will give a significant boost to the African hospitality industry.
