15.000 British tourists blocked in Sharm el-Sheikh

Following the Russian plane crash, airlines are selling cheap flights to Egypt despite thousands holidaymakers are still stranded in the resort

Thomas Cook and Thomson major tour operators are offering 49 per cent discount package holidays for Egypt, while Monarch is planning to restart flights in the area on Friday, the 13th of November, despite the official Foreign Office travel guidance advice against “all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el-Sheikh”, as thousands of foreign tourists are trying to depart local airports.

Rescue flights restrictions have limited UK airlines' attempts to bring back the stranded passengers.

The biggest airline to Sharm el-Sheikh, EasyJet, declared about the current situation:

“Over the next week we had been scheduled to operate up to six flights a day so this will make it very difficult for us to get people home as quickly as we and they would like.

“We will operate as many flights as we are permitted to do so to get passengers back to the UK.”

Monarch also said:

“We recognize this is a very frustrating situation and apologize for the inconvenience this is causing our customers.”

Moreover, British Airways will soon announce the closure of Gatwick-Sharm el-Sheikh resort route.

Anyone tempted by low current fares for Egypt could find themselves in the unpleasant situation of flying to a destination from which thousands of passengers are actually trying to leave.
